The question we get asked most at the proposal stage isn't "what will this cost" — it's "how many days should this actually be." Most families default to five days because that's the wedding they last attended, not because they've worked out what five days actually requires.
What each function actually needs
Roka, haldi and mehendi can often share a day or run on consecutive half-days without feeling rushed — they're smaller, more intimate functions that don't need a full day of setup and strike each. Sangeet needs its own evening, full stop; it's a production day. Pheras and reception are sometimes combined into one very long day, which we'd generally advise against once guest count passes 300 — the energy in the room by 11pm is different after a full day of ceremony than after an afternoon of rest beforehand.
The three-day version that still works
We planned a three-day, 320-guest wedding in Udaipur by combining the sangeet with the welcome dinner and running haldi as a smaller, family-only morning function the day before. Nobody who attended described it as rushed. What made it work was being honest about which functions the couple actually cared about, rather than defaulting to six because that's the standard sequence.
When five or six days is genuinely worth it
A large guest list with a significant number of out-of-town or international guests changes the calculation — those guests are often taking real vacation time to attend, and a longer, more paced schedule gives everyone (including the couple) room to actually enjoy each function instead of running a relay. This is less about tradition and more about not burning out your own family in week one.
How to actually decide
Start from your guest list, not from a template. If a third of your guests are flying in, more days help. If your functions are mostly close family with a big reception at the end, three focused days can look and feel more considered than five thin ones. Tell us your guest count and which functions matter most to you, and we'll tell you honestly how many days that actually needs.
